The Beauty of Having Died

If with Christ you died to the elemental spirits of the world, why, as if you were still alive in the world, do you submit to regulations—“Do not handle, Do not taste, Do not touch” (referring to things that all perish as they are used)—according to human precepts and teachings?

Colossians 2:20-22 (ESV)

If we were dead, we wouldn’t have struggles with flesh and frailty. But then, we would be dead. Christ has made it possible for us to have the benefits of being dead while we are still alive in our bodies.

His death paid the penalty of our violated covenant. We shall never have to face the debt of our crime. But his death also made it possible for us to live with him now because we were with him in his death. This mysterious union is our hope. When we place our faith in him, his whole life becomes ours. His past is ours. His future is ours. His present is ours. He died for us, but also as us.

Because the basic elements of the world system are focused on externals, they will always be fighting for dominance. Man-made religion will feature what we handle, what we taste, and what we touch. The cross of Christ renders such tactics useless as it relates to our relationship to God and to the world. Knowing laws without knowing the Lawgiver always produces legalism and the judgmentalism that accompanies it. Those who are strict observers of such things appear to be more sincere and holier, but these rules do not produce any victory over the flesh.

The flesh cannot be long suppressed. It must be crucified. The more we try to crucify ourselves, the stronger flesh gets. Actually we get puffed up because of the sacrifice we make to strangle the flesh. The solution is death. Finally that which opposes God is dealt with. We have died with Christ. We have his life now to enjoy and display.
