We Have Work To Do

The end of all things is at hand…as each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace: whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies—in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ.
1 Peter 4:1, 10-11a (ESV)
Peter is not trying to alarm his readers by prophesying the end of time as we know it. Rather, he is alerting them to the special nature of the time in which they (and we) live.

We are privileged to live in the aftermath of God’s great intervention in history. Jesus has come to fulfill the promises of the Old Testament, and we are those who are joint heirs with him. We have been left--but not left alone--to do what Adam and Eve were assigned to do. God has chosen to defeat the serpent on the same ground where the serpent defeated Eve, by sending his Son as a fully human second Adam. As Adam Jesus redeemed us from the curses of the Eden-catastrophe. From his position at the right hand of the Father, he has sent the Spirit to empower us to work out the ramifications of his grand act of restoration.
We live during hostilities still present, and in an earth that is not yet transformed. But as new creations, we invade the regions where decay is still ruling by declaring, “He has arisen. Jesus is Lord.”

We have only one real hero in our company. He has gifted each of us with abilities that are needful for the task. As we work together for the same purpose, we find that he is active in the restoration project on earth. Gifts are not rewards for good works. We have no legitimate reason to neglect to use ours. We all are recipients and our reasonable response is to unite and use what we have. God does require us to give what we have not been given, but he does expect us to fully use what we have.
I fear that too many of us are still waiting for the big change. It has happened in the coming of Jesus as Israel’s Messiah and the Lord over all. Since he forgives sin, we cannot hide behind our unworthiness in refusing to engage. Since he has already received us, we dare not retreat in the face of rejection. The only right thing to do considering when and where we live is to activate. There is work to do!
